| Kathleen Balcam, Owner/Operator With my Bachelors of Arts degree in psychology in hand and on the brink of completing my Master's in Counseling, College Student Personnel Services, I finally realized that finding a career or employment in my field was not going to be found in my community. Moving was not an option. My business began after resigning from a position with a company that eventually would close due to unscrupulous/illegal business practices. I had been unemployed since July of 2005. I was tired of interviewing for companies that did not fit my core values as well as fully utilizing all my skills. I could not secure employment that offered a competitive wage that would incorporate my educational and employment background to become a fully satisfied and provide an acceptable quality of life. I uncovered an understanding that there were three themes in a career that would provide a sense of personal fulfillment for me. These themes are: to honor my core values as a person, the utilization my education and previous work experiences, and an avenue to provide myself an acceptable quality of life. As the owner and operator of K & B Cleaning Service since the January of 2006, I have found starting this business a rewarding challenge that has utilized my customer service skills combined with savvy business practices and old-fashioned hard work. My fond memories of helping my mother for over ten years with her cleaning route had been a major influence to start this business. My mother instilled in me the pride that comes from doing a job right the first time. As well as to provide my clients a personalized, thorough, and common sense approach to residential cleaning encompasses all the unique details that makes their place a home to them, at affordable and competitive rates! In 2006, the goals of K & B Cleaning Service are to set up a strong foundation of sound business practices, provide quality service to clients, and to hire at least one employee. My three year target is have proven my quality of service in my community to the point that I have hired six employees with benefits. K & B Cleaning Service looks to expand services in to the commercial sector within five years. The key to success of K & B Cleaning Service is to consistently provide a personalized approach to cleaning to be able develop a cliental base large enough for additional employees. This key to provide personalized service will always influence my decisions because it honors my values as a person, which gives me overall satisfaction.
As a member of IJCSA, I have found that I learn from others by asking questions, learning from other mistakes/situation, and training myself in all areas of this business. I feel that I can offer valuable suggestions to others that have just started out because I have just experienced their level of 'building business pains
